Parnell Railway Station
Auckland Transport is investigating the development of a new train station in the suburb of Parnell, Auckland. The station will provide strong direct connections to key catchments including Parnell Village, the Auckland War Memorial, University of Auckland and Carlaw Park. The total cost of the project is estimated at $19.2 million and is scheduled for completion in 2015.
It is expected that during major event (i.e. Christmas in the Park) the new train station will be one of the main public transport hubs. To ensure that the train station is able to cope with the extra pedestrian demand on a major event day, TDG undertook a Pedestrian Capacity Assessment. The aim of the assessment was to determine Level of Service of station elements such as stairs, bridges and platform areas during event conditions.
The assessment also reviewed the local pedestrian paths adjacent to the new station to identify any pinch points and issues that may arise when large crowds use the station.
The outputs from this study were used by architects to inform the design of the proposed railway station and also used by Auckland Council to address pinch points in the surrounding pedestrian paths. As such the outputs achieved exactly the outcome our clients were intended for.
